Als onderwerp voor zijn schilderijen put Rik Cox uit de menselijke onmacht en het onderhuidse emotionele leven. Hij combineert de discipline en het instinct van een vakman met het onverwachte en schept, respecteert en beantwoordt liever de omstandigheden waaronder iets ontstaat dan dat hij het proces vóóraf in alle details wenst te bepalen. Daardoor kunnen er, naast acrylverf, ook andere materialen zoals bijvoorbeeld hout, papier, metaal of leer op het doek terechtkomen. Abstract en figuratief vloeien in gemengde techniek samen tot kleurrijke, emotievolle beelden: het geheime leven ontbloot.

Rik Cox’s paintings find their inspiration in two aspects of the human condition: our feeling of smallness as we navigate a complex and ever expanding universe, and the secret emotional life we live as we try to come to terms with the way things are. Cox’s work combines the trained craftman’s discipline and instincts with the ability to work with the unexpected. He creates a situation in which a work can unfold, and then he respects and answers this “becoming” rather than trying to control the process in all its details. Cox works chiefly with acrylic paint, but other materials can demand their place on the canvas -- wood, paper, metal, leather, it all depends on what the painting needs to become complete. Abstract elements flow together with figurative ones until a colorful, evocative whole has been formed. The secret life of things revealed.
